NewsI am very proud to be Chairman of such an exciting, vibrant club and I am privileged to enjoy the support of a dynamic committee and dedicated staff. Included with this letter you will find a notice of our Annual General Meeting. Please forward any nominations for the 2010/11 committee to the club manager before the 1st of August 2010. There have been many more changes and improvements to our club’s amenities over the past year. These improvements are set to continue so as to maintain a high level of service to our members. The appointment of Paul Smit as club manager and Scuba Officer, the commencement of diver training and the installation of our own nitrox station has lead to an increase in scuba members and scuba activity. The home coming of the Wahoo Spearo’s and the birth of DUC Surfski section has led to further positive growth taking our membership numbers from 900 last year to a comfortable 1650 at present. This growth means that we are now the leading active water sports club in Durban. We have unfortunately found it necessary to cap social members however membership is always open to all sporting enthusiasts in the following disciplines - Scuba Diving, Spearfishing, Underwater Hockey, Boating and Surfskiing. Together with Point Yacht Club and Durban Ski Boat Club, DUC has
signed an agreement with DPDC (Durban Point Development Company)
which secures our spot in the sun – 4500 square metres of land on
the beach adjacent to the new North Pier. Thank you for supporting your club. CUANE HALL Dear Member, 2010/2011 membership fees are due on 1st July 2010. Please take special note of the following:- There has been a slight, less than inflation, increase in subscriptions for the upcoming year. This increase in part replaces a special levy being imposed to make provision for future development of the club which may still be called for should the need arise. The Committee is aware that the economy is in recession and is prepared to consider ways in which Members can pay their annual subscription apart from the usual one off payment. Please contact the club manager to discuss a payment plan if required.
Should you wish to relinquish your membership, please send a letter of resignation via post to the address above or e-mail to duc@mweb.co.za for my attention before the 31st of July 2010 in order for your account to be credited and your place made available for prospective members on the waiting list. Your invoice may reflect an Associate fee. An Associate is any person, including family members or partners that accompany the Senior or Affiliate member to the club or use their membership to gain access. If your invoice does not reflect a Associate fee when it should, please advise the club manager to avoid embarrassment when membership checks are in progress. Associate members are allowed access to the club without the Senior or Affiliate member having to be present.
For electronic transfers please reflect your account number on the invoice which should match the number presently on your membership card as the reference. Banking details are as follows: Account holder:- Durban
Undersea Club
The club communicates regularly with it’s members via e-mail and sms. Should you not be receiving these communications from the club please send an e-mail to duc@mweb.co.za with your cell phone number to be added to the database. Thanking you and looking forward to a great 2010/11. Sincerely Leigh Phillips PARKING AND GUEST ACCESS Since Oct 2008, the DUC membership has grown by 50% and with the building of the new boat shelters, the parking area for members has been reduced resulting in a shortage of available parking for members on busy days. To help alleviate the shortage, the clubs have asked that invited non-member guests are to please park outside the gate and walk through to the clubs. So please be advised that you will no longer be able to leave your guests’ name at the gate to allow them vehicle access. The committees of all the clubs are working on coming up with a solution to the parking shortage in the near future. PLEASE DO NOT ABUSE THE GATE GUARD, HE IS DOING HIS JOB AND PROTECTING THE INTERESTS OF ALL PAID UP MEMBERS. Members who abuse the guard for refusing them access will place their continued membership of the clubs in jeopardy. Please be prepared to show your membership card when requested to do so – even if you have been a member for 20 years. CLUB IMPROVEMENTS To help the club cope with the increased demands on the bar and kitchen, dish and glass washers have been installed , an extra till point added to the bar as well as all till power and UPS systems upgraded, a food order pager system installed, additional picnic tables purchased and extra staff have been employed. Other cosmetic improvements and maintenance have also taken place including: re-tiling of the kitchen, repair of the walkway to toilets, re-paving of outside pathway, painting of the roof, upgrade and paving of northern gate access , demarcation of boat washing area and (still in progress) repainting of outside bar area under the awning. Soon to be done will be a repainting of the clubhouse floors.A big issue which is receiving attention is an upgrade of the water pressure and supply which is in the hands of the Municipality at the moment.DUC is now also a WiFi hotspot through Always On and ITWorks, so now there is no excuse to leave the club – you can move your office to the beach. Mweb subscribers get 5hrs free and we encourage all members to make use of this facility to make it viable for all involved and we can keep connected. A big thank you to the following contributors to the club improvements:
and to the many other members that contribute in small ways like donating plants for the grounds and fish for the marine display. FOR SALE AND WANTED To make room for further improvements to the clubhouse, the
committee has decided to sell the pool table – any interested
members have first option to make a generous offer. We had a fantastic response to our last request for donations of umbrellas for our tables – however you will see by the sad state of our current umbrellas that these offers have not materialized. Come on guys – imagine your logo splashed all over the club grounds and visible from the beach , sea and air by all passersby and the incredible good will the massive DUC membership base will have towards you company for the real benefits you have given them – protection from the sun, heat and skin cancer! On Thomas’s wish list at the moment is an undercounter fridge so he can do more prep work and have increased storage to make his kitchen uber efficient – can anybody help him? "Cocktail" Mike’s Bar Safety Tip of the month: If you're choking on an ice cube simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat. Presto!! The blockage will instantly remove itself.
